AGARTALA: The state election commission has rescheduled the poll day of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) election by two days after several political parties and organisations of the state requested the commission to change the date of the poll.

The move comes after the Commission received numerous requests from different political parties and other state organisations demanding that the poll date be changed due to the "local significance" of Easter Sunday.

State election commission secretary Prasenjit Bhattacharjee stated that it was brought to the commission's notice that election on April 4 (Sunday) would be inconvenient for a large number of people for whom the day has special significance since it falls on Easter Sunday.

In a notification released on Friday evening, Bhattacharjee said, “Several representations were received from various political parties and other organisations of the state requesting the Commission to change the date of poll for this election.”

Because of the “local significance” of Easter Sunday, polling for the autonomous tribal administrative body has been rescheduled for April 6, with results anticipated on April 10, said the notification, which also stated that the entire polling process will be completed by April 16.

“I am happy that the Election Commissioner has postponed the date of polling from 4th to the 6th of April. Easter Sunday is an important day to all and this decision by the administration is welcomed by us. We are a secular country and all religions must be respected,” royal scion Pradyot Kishor Deb Barman tweeted.
