AGARTALA: Tripura Congress chief Pijush Kanti Biswas escaped with minor injuries after unidentified miscreants attacked his vehicle at Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district of Tripura on Sunday morning.

Biswas, who managed to escape with the help of his security personnel, was rushed to a local hospital for first aid.

He went to the town, about 20 km from here, to take part in a party programme and his vehicle was attacked in front of the Congress’ field office. Sources said several Congress workers, who tried to intervene, were also injured in the attack.

He alleged the attackers were supporters of the ruling BJP. Biswas also alleged police inaction despite being present at the spot.

Biswas’s vehicle was badly damaged with its windshields and windowpanes shattered by the attackers.

Biswas, who could not be contacted over phone, is stated to have filed a police complaint. Police said they were investigating the matter and no one was picked up so far.

Biswas has been the president of the party state unit since December 2019 after the resignation of Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.

The attack came two days after Biswas led agitations against the Centre's contentious farm laws. He led a march from Mahatma Gandhi’s statue to Raj Bhavan here.

The state has been witnessing political violence over the past couple of years. Former chief minister Manik Sarkar had recently alleged that BJP workers have been attacking CPM and other party workers from time to time, a charge the BJP had later trashed.
