AGARTALA: Even as 10,323 teachers of Tripura have been staging sit-in demonstration here, state education minister Ratan Lal Nath on Friday announced that the government would start giving offer letters to 1468 teachers from January 20.

“We will start releasing offer letters to 1468 candidates who have cleared Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) from January 20. They include 571 undergraduates and 897 graduate teachers. We have not yet got the number of teachers required from the Teachers Recruitment Board Tripura (TRBT),” Nath said.

The state education department had asked the TRBT to provide 1725 undergraduate teachers and 2116 graduate teachers. However, the board could provide only 1468 teachers prompting the department to conduct TET to meet the shortfall.

Nath, who is also a government spokesperson, said that the government has already recruited 7,551 people in government jobs ever since the formation of the BJP government in the state in 2018. He also said that 1,507 more people are going to be recruited shortly.

“A total of 7551 people have been given jobs in Tripura since the BJP formed the government. Of them, 2944 are regular, 2250 are contractual, 1956 are outsourced and 401 through the die-in-harness scheme,” Nath added.

The state has been facing shortage of teachers since 10,323 teachers were sacked on the basis of a Supreme Court verdict that ruled “irregularities in recruitment” process. The sacked teachers have been staging a strike over the past 40 days demanding their rehabilitation through direct recruitment.
