Tripura: Heavy rain lashes out in state, set to continue

Agartala and adjoining areas of Tripura witnessed heavy downpour, triggered by strong southerly winds from Bay of Bengal to Northeast India at lower troposphere level. There was gusty wind with cloudy sky and shower throughout the day and the minimum and the maximum temperature settled at 20.8 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Residents of the capital woke up to a dark sky and heavy rains that lashed, causing inconvenience to people in the morning hours. The spell of gusty winds coupled with downpour uprooted trees in areas like Master Para, Netaji Choumuhani, Gandhighat, Circuit House etc. that led to a slow movement in traffic. People going office from home had to witness slow traffic movement due to the downpour. A chill factor sets in because of wind and a drop in the temperature.

The capital and its neighboring areas have been witnessing moderate rains since last night. The showers continued during night and following morning leading to a drop in temperature. The prevailing situation is a result of active southerly winds from Bay of Bengal to Northeast India at lower troposphere level. Meanwhile, several areas in and around the city were plunged into darkness following the downpour. Tree branches also fell on the ground damaging household properties, electric poles and makeshift boundaries. "Generally cloudy conditions with heavy rainfall at most places accompanied with wind most likely during May 28 and 29”, the weather department said.

The Regional Meteorological observatory recorded 79.8 mm rainfall today. The humidity at 5.30 pm was recorded at 96 per cent. As per the India Meteorological Department, the thunderstorm activity is likely to continue over parts of the state till the weekend. An IMD official predicted, “Overcast conditions with rain accompanied by wind are expected to occur till May 31. The maximum and the minimum temperatures would be around 29 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius, tomorrow. However, the rain improved the quality of air as polluting dust particles were washed off.

As per the report of State Emergency Operation Centre in Tripura, in Sadar sub-division, some electric poles have been uprooted at Battala bridge, electric lines, a motorcycle and four wheeler have been damaged after trees collapsed at many places, power supply disrupted at various places due to uprooting of electrical posts.

Apart from this, the compound wall of PHQ has suffered damage due to uprooting of tree and electricity posts.

At Jirania sub-division, the national highway was blocked as the tree uprooted number of trees. Besides, 42 families have been affected and seven houses suffered severe damage.

Under Mohanpur sub-division in Tripura, the Mohanpur-Simna road was blocked due to the uprooting of trees. Apart from this, 11 families have suffered damage. The administration has extended interim reliefs to the affected people in both the sub-divisions. Meanwhile, many other houses were damaged in other districts due to storm in the past 48 hours.
