Tripura is pursuing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Risha, a famous indigenous handwoven textile used by the state’s indigenous inhabitants, following in the footsteps of the ‘Queen’ variety pineapple. According to sources, the state government will submit a proposal to the federal government soon.
While discussing about the issue, Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission Chief Executive Officer Dr. Vishal Kumar stated that the state government is also working hard to improve the product’s value and quality.
He further stated that the relevant documentation for ‘Risha’ will be filed to the central government by June, with the goal of making the product fit for the worldwide market. He believes the benefits will be noticeable in the next year or two.
The Tripura government, led by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, has promoted the traditional ‘Risha’ as the state’s signature identity. Last year, the Indian Handloom Brand declared that ‘Risha’ would be a brand.
