AGARTALA: A spine-chilling video has surfaced online which shows a mob brutally thrashing a man, suspected to be a firefighter from Tripura. The video, reportedly shot during the protests against the settlement of Bru refugees in Tripura, is spreading like wildfire on social media platforms. The firefighter, who was reportedly the man being thrashed in the viral video, has since succumbed to his injuries.

The video, shared online by a person named Suraj Nath, shows the man receiving multiple blows from his assailants. Even though the firefighter had fallen down, unconscious, his assailants continued raining down blows with sticks. The utter and absolute break down of law and order in the Northeast Indian state has caused serious cause for concern, with several organizations demanding a proper probe into the incident. With the death of the fireman earlier in the day, the death toll in the protests rose to 2.

Meanwhile, Tripura royal Pradyot Manikya has demanded punishment for the "murderers" who thrashed the fireman -- identified as Biswajit Debbarma -- to death in such a brutal manner.

"Those leaders who broke the law and killed an innocent fireman will have to pay the price . TIPRA DEMANDS criminal action and arrest against these people and organisations who despite repeated requests broke the law. TIPRA has also decided to give Rs 50,000 in support of the family of Biswajit Debbarma as a sign of solidarity in their moment of grief, Biswajit was doing his duty when he was brutally murdered and we all know who are the people behind this. I appeal for all to maintain peace and demand the Govt to arrest these persons involved," the royal, a former Tripura Congress Chief, wrote in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, the state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and announced Rs. 5 lakh compensation for the deceased’s family.

An indefinite shutdown has been called in North Tripura against the state government’s formula to resettle Bru migrants from Mizoram.
