Tripura: Specially impaired girl raped, abused on false marriage pretence

A specially impaired girl who had been raped by one of her neighbours and was later promised of marriage. The guy refuted of getting married and she finally sought the police's help for justice. The incident, however, once again reflected the social stigma pertaining to the incidents like Rape and the social inability of reporting such incidents straight away in Tripura. 

According to the sources, the specially impaired girl was raped by one Anil Nama. Nama, a resident of Kalikapur went to the victim's neighbourhood in a tour to the residence of his in-laws. In the evening of June 18 last, he entered the room of the girl while her blind father was out for his daily chores. He succeeded in his evil intentions and escaped when the victim raised the alarm. But, soon the locals came to know about the incident and confronted Anil in a local Kangaroo Court, Tripura where he took the responsibility and committed to marry her.

But, the girl was refused by Anil's family members and was forced to come back. The father of the girl, Narendra Das lodged an FIR with the local police station last night against Anil and his family. In the FIR, it was mentioned that the girl was physically tortured by Anil, his father and brother Gopal. “On the evening of 18th June last, daughter of Narendra Das was sexually harassed by Anil Nama, the son-in-law of her neighbours. On the condition of marrying her, Anil took her with him to his house in Kalikapur despite being married. There were no complaints about this incident. But, she was refused to be accepted and once again assaulted physically by the family members of Anil.

An FIR was lodged in Tripura by Narendra Das and we had already arrested Anil's father and brother in connection with charges labelled against them”, a local police officer said. On the other hand, Anil was still absconding and had also sent her first wife back to her residence. Narendra Das, the victim's father said that Anil convinced her wife in front of the villagers. The local Pradhan and members of the Panchayat took signatures of Anil and his wife to get Anil's second marriage with my daughter solemnized. But, after she was forced to send back, Anil's parents refused.“It was decided that after Anil's father and brother would arrive, the marriage between Anil and my daughter would be solemnized at the local court. But, when they arrived they refused and put forth the condition that the marriage would be only possible if it was done following the rituals. On the other hand, I kept on saying that social marriage would surely take place but only after a documented marriage as I had no faith in their words. Finally, I had lodged the FIR with local police station”, Das told this reporter.
