Two die of shock as 6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Assam; 10 others injured

GUWAHATI: At least two people died of shock or heart attack, while 10 others received injuries after an earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck Assam today.

However, no casualty resulting due to earthquake injuries was reported from across the state.

Both the persons who died of shock were from Kamrup (M) and Nagaon districts.

On the other hand, six of the injured belonged to Darrang district, one each from Kamrup (M) and Nagaon while two were from Sonitpur district.

Besides the injuries, several high-rise buildings and roads in the state were also damaged due to the impact of the quake.

The epicentre of the earthquake, at a focal depth of 17 km, was Sonitpur district, while preliminary analysis showed it was located near the Kopili Fault closer to the Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT).

The area is stated to be seismically very active, falling in the highest seismic hazard zone V, associated with collisional tectonics where Indian Plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate.

Meanwhile, the state disaster management authority is doing a detailed damage assessment in coordination with other agencies.
