Joe Biden or Donald Trump, America decides today. The United States is all set to choose its 45th president on 3 November.

To be the president, a candidate must win at least 270 votes in what is called the electoral college.

All of the US state gets a certain number of votes partly based on its population and there are a total of 538 up for grabs.

This system also explains why it is possible for a candidate to win the most votes nationally - like Hillary Clinton did in 2016 - but still lose the election.

According to reports, Each state of US there are more than 257 million people who is 18 or older, nearly 240 million citizens are eligible to vote this year.

It said that 54 per cent of those 58.7 million votes already cast this cycle comes from 16 most competitively ranked states, which will play a very crucial role in determining who wins the presidency elections this year.

Unlike India, where the Elections are announced days after various rounds of polling, every US state counts and declares its result once the polling is over.

Almost all the states will begin polling at 6 am EST. But, the first state to open voting is Vermont at 5 am EST November 3. Voting closes latest by 9 pm EST November 4 in New York and North Dakota. The first polls to close will do so at 7 pm EST.

As the nation counts down the hours to the vote, there are fears that post-election violence could break out.

Americans will give their final verdict today by choosing their President, either giving incumbent President Donald Trump another four years or bestowing reins to Democratic former Vice President Joe Biden.

According to reports the result of the polling is expected today itself, November 3.
