GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday stated that the drugs seized during the last 2-3 months under his governance will be publicly destroyed on July 17 and 18 in the state.

Speaking at the assembly, the Chief Minister informed that the seized drugs will be burnt publicly in Diphu and Golaghat on July 17 while it will be carried out in Nagaon and Hojai in July 18.

The decision for this move has been taken to deliver a message to the public about the alarming menace of drug trafficking in the state, said the Chief Minister.

"The menace was always there. We were not aware of its intensity", said the Chief Minister.

"There will be attempts to discourage the police department that will encourage the drug peddlers", he added.

During the session, Sarma informed that in the last 2-3 months, 1120 cases have been registered by Assam Police.  A total of 1897 drug peddlers have been nabbed and nearly 28kg heroin has been recovered.
