Since his election as MP for Southend in 1997, he has built up reputation in Westminster as zealous defender of his constituency and the driving force behind long-running drive to award the town city status.

After Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered in 2016, and Labour's Stephen Timms was attacked in 2010, this was the third time British MP has been stabbed in their constituency in recent years.
