Diphu, 9 July, 2019:

A vast number of Karbi youths in and around Hamren town in West Karbi Anglong have been educated and have reached the levels of 'graduate' and 'post graduate' during the ongoing 'education boom' in the nation. However, the tragedy of unemployment still continues to demoralize these youths in search of better opportunities in their lives.

The poor financial status of their families has also compelled many of these youths to take drastic steps to financially assist their parents. These youths, despite being highly educated, have been seen running small businesses in Hamren to support their families.

Four youths by the names Waisong Rongphar, Daniel Tisso, Chesong Timung, Gopal Ingti Kathar have been seen selling roasted meat (or 'tandoori') of several kinds and earn a paltry sum for their day-to-day survival.

Similarly, girl named Mir Etso Phangchopi studying in degree third semester has also taken to selling 'chanas' and mixtures of different varieties after considering the serious monetary need within her family and is said to be earning 700 to 800 rupees daily to meet the needs of her family.

India's rate of unemployment doubled in the past two years, according to the State of India’s Environment (SoE) In Figures, 2019. This has particularly affected young graduates, wjho cannot seem to get a job in the highly competitive job market.

According to the report, the unemployment rate has gone up from four per cent to 7.6 in the last two years (May 2017-April 2019). The unemployment rate in April 2019 was the highest in two years. The rate for rural areas in this month was also the highest in this period.
