PANAJI: Union minister of state for defence and AYUSH Shripad Y Naik, who sustained injuries in a road accident in Karnataka, underwent multiple surgeries at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) near here last night, a hospital health bulletin said on Tuesday.

The hospital has stated the condition of the minister to be stable.

The 68-year-old Naik underwent surgeries for fractures on both his hands and a leg, the informed.

While the minister survived with injuries, his wife Vijaya and his personal secretary Deepak died last night when their car met with the accident near Ankola in Uttar Kannada district, while he was returning to home state Goa from Dharmasthala in neighbouring Karnataka. Vijaya was pronounced brought dead, while Deepak succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The BJP MP from North Goa was shifted to the GMCH near here from a hospital in Ankola in critical condition shortly before midnight.

The accident happened when Naik's driver lost his control over the vehicle near Hosakambi village in Ankola Taluk and the car overturned. "It was not a collision between vehicles. Prima facie it appears to be the case of the driver losing control of the car," police told newsmen in Bengaluru late Monday night.

Karnataka police said Naik, along with his wife Viajaya, Deepak, his close confidante Sai Kiran, gunman and the driver, were heading from Yallapur to Gokarna on Monday night.

Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant said Naik's condition was critical earlier, but now he is "stable". "A team of doctors, led by dean of GMCH Dr Shivanand Bandekar, is treating him. We are giving him the best medical care,” Sawant said.

Health minister Vishwajit Rane said another medical team was on a standby to ensure best treatment for Naik.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke to Goa chief minister Sawant and asked him to ensure proper medical treatment for the minister.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also spoke to Sawant about speedy medical treatment to the minister.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Modi, Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa and many other ministers and leaders have condoled the demise of Naik's wife and conveyed their wishes for Naik's speedy recovery.
