GUWAHATI: The third front alliance between Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) appears to have run into troubled water even before seat sharing was finalised.

The newly floated Raijor Dal headquarters here witnessed unruly scenes today as supporters of a party ticket aspirant from Upper Assam opposed the party leaving the Bihpuria constituency in Lakhimpur district in favour of its ally AJP.

Over 100 supporters of Anup Saikia, the Raijor Dal ticket aspirant from the constituency, staged a protest at the party headquarters demanding that Raijor Dal should contest from the seat.

“Saikia has been a popular farmers’ leader in our constituency. He has been leading the party to certain victory in the constituency. He has worked a lot for the people of the constituency,” said one of the protesters.

"We will not part with the seat at any cost," he added.

Saikia’s supporters raised slogans in his favour.

Sources said Saikia reached here yesterday to file nomination and when he was told the party had decided to leave the seat for AJP, his supporters landed up here this morning to press for his candidature.

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity-backed Raijor Dal and the All Assam Students’ Union-backed AJP have forged a third front alliance for the state polls keeping themselves away from national parties Congress and BJP and communal parties.

Meanwhile, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and imprisoned Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi are likely to meet at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital here this afternoon to finalise seat sharing between the two parties.
