TANGLA: There have been murmurs of an alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) ever since Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared in a public rally that people should discard the nangol (symbol of the Bodoland People's Front) to a tractor (the UPPL symbol).

Commenting on the possibility of an alliance between the national party and the regional powerhouse, the latter's charismatic leader Promod Boro said, "There is no matter of an understanding. Everybody speaks of tractors nowadays as nobody uses the nangol anymore. We do not have an understanding with any party as everybody is contesting alone. However, the Congress and AIUDF are contesting together and the BPF is also making calculations with them and the Gana Suraksha Party is also a part of that."

Stating that there is no competition for the UPPL, Boro said, "Our main concerns are to promote brotherhood among communities, to promote peace, to give security to all, build roads and embankments and bridges, resolve the man-elephant conflict, provide clean drinking water. The challenge is not coming from any party or organization."

The UPPL leader, interacting with us, also stated that the UPPL is confident of forming the Government in the BTC region.

The BTC region will see a three-cornered contest in December, with the UPPL, BJP, and BPF locking horns in the 40-member Council.

It needs mention here that the Election Commission of Assam on Tuesday declared the dates of the upcoming polls in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) which were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Alok Kumar, the State Election Commissioner of Assam, today announced that the BTC election shall be held in two phases — on December 7 and 10.
