Guwahati, June 1, 2019:

The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on Saturday celebrated the success of its NET/SLET/GATE qualified students of 2018-19 at a grand program held today. In the programme, 33 of the successful students were felicitated under the USTM's 'Pay-Back' Policy. The University will pay back the entire course fee to the successful students as per this unique initiative. The programme was held at the university's Dr Nirmal Kumar Choudhury Auditorium.

Pallav Bhattacharya, IPS, former Assam Spl. DGP (SB) graced the occasion as its Chief Guest.

Chief Guest Bhattacharya said that universities must work for societal development and commended the USTM for returning the entire course fees to the students.

He also praised the University management for the development it has made in the last decade.

Mahbubul Haque, Chancellor of the USTM said that the University is giving such incentives to students to ensure that they remain motivated to excel in the field of academics.

He also informed that the USTM has launched and introduced the BA administrative service - a new course with focus on competitive exams such as IAS, IPS, etc.

He said that the Northeast is lagging behind in producing IAS and IPS officers because of a lack of conducive environment, lack of proper guidance, lack of resource persons and lack of encouragement.

He also assured that the USTM will ensure that meritorious students will not be deprived of reaching their full potential due to financial problems.

The 3-year course has six semesters and students have to appear for six papers in each semester. Moreover, students have to choose an optional subject from among the following -- Sociology, Political Science, History, Geography, or Psychology.

The programme ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Balendra Kr Das, Director Administration of USTM.

Dr P.K Goswami, Vice Chancellor, USTM, and Dr Anjan Saikia, renowned gastroenterologist, (who served as the Guest of Honour) also graced the occasion with their presence.

Dr R.K. Sharma, the Advisor of USTM, was also present.
