In an earlier post, Pant had written, “My sincere condolences and prayers for the families of those affected by the Uttarakhand flash floods. I hope that the rescue operations underway are able to help those in trouble.”

The glacier broke off at Joshimath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand leading to a huge flood in the Dhauli Ganga river and caused large-scale destruction in the upper reaches of the ecologically fragile Himalayas.

Homes were washed away along the way as the waters flowed in a roaring river down the mountainsides. There were fears of damage in human settlements downstream, however, several villages were evacuated and residents were taken to safer areas.

Over 150 laborers working in a power project are missing and 11 bodies have so far been recovered.
