Vet Dept Moves Assam Govt to Ban Poultry Import in View of Avian Flu

GUWAHATI: The veterinary department has requested the Assam home and political departments to impose a ban on the import of poultry in view of the avian flu outbreak in the country.

The department has, however, made no recommendation to cull birds in the state.

Assam imports chicken on a large scale from West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand etc.

The veterinary department has directed all its district officers to carry out virological surveillance of wild migratory birds in nesting areas and to maintain surveillance live poultry markets, areas with a high duck population, water bodies where migratory and domestic birds congregate.

After at least six states, inclduing Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh, reported about the outbreak of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in poultry, crows and migratory birds, the government came out with an alert saying HPAI is highly contagious and can cause huge losses in terms of mortality and trade of poultry and poultry products.


According to an advisory, the directorate of veterinary in the hill state has requested the people to report unusual sickness and mortality of poultry, ducks, birds to the nearest veterinary health centre.

The Tripura government also sounded a similar alert today to keep a strict vigil and watch out for any unusual mortality, sickness in birds.
