Want to visit Shillong? Here are the new COVID-19 restrictions you should know

SHILLONG: Meghalaya's chief minister Conrad K Sangma today took to social media to announce a new set of COVID-19 related restrictions that shall be in place in Shillong and its adjoining areas.

RT-PCR test has been mandatory in entry points for entrants. Those who have completed both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine can show the certificate at the entry point.

Furthermore, all the tourist spots in East Khasi Hills will be shut till April 30 of 2021. This means that you will not be able to visit some of the most iconic spots in the state -- such as the Shillong Peak and Elephant falls -- which are thronged by visitors this time of the year.

Colleges and universities in Shillong will be closed till May 3 of 2021 except colleges that are exam centres. Online classes held from the college premises will be permitted.

Gyms, clubs, swimming pools, gaming parlours, cinemas, salons, and bars will also be shut from 23-30 April of 2021.

Non-essential shops will be closed from 26 April to May 2. Details of the same will be shared by the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills.

During this period, the government offices will operate with 33% strength.

"We stress again on the need for all citizens to not let their guards down. Please limit unnecessary traveling and avoid crowded spaces. We also encourage citizens above 45 years of age to take the vaccine," Meghalaya's chief minister Conrad K Sangma appealed via social media.

The trend of high number of cases continued on Tuesday with 137 new cases in the state.

Out of the 137 fresh cases, 111 cases were reported in East Khasi Hills, nine in Ri Bhoi, seven in West Jaintia Hills, four each in West Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills and one each in East Jaintia Hills and South West Khasi Hills.

The state also recorded 34 recoveries on Tuesday including 26 in East Khasi Hills, three each in Ri Bhoi and West Garo Hills, and two in West Jaintia Hills.
