Weathering With You: Inside Northeast Movie Review

‘Weathering With You’ is the latest release by ‘Your Name’ Director Makoto Shinkai. It is also Japan’s official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards.

It is traditionally an animated movie, like Shinkai’s earlier movies, but it can be enjoyed by adult audiences as well.

The story is set in Tokyo and follows the adventures of Hodaka, a boy who runs away from his family.

In Tokyo where it has been raining constantly for 2 months, he comes across many adventures and finally meets and falls in love with the ‘sunshine girl’ Hina, a girl who can control the weather for brief periods of time.

However, there is a twist in the tale. As the the film’s legend goes, the sunshine girl must be sacrificed for the incessant rain to stop. So, will the star-crossed lovers unite? You have to watch the film to find out.

The film might feel like an urban myth, but at its core, it is all about teenage love and yearning. Through the two leads, the Director explores the purity and craziness of first love. He also questions how far one can go for the sake of their loved ones.

In all, it is a satisfying fable that is bound to appease hardcore anime lovers as well as general audiences. The amusing characters and the small moments of comedy which are a part of the storyline will no doubt find wide acceptance among audiences.

A feel-good entertainer and a deep exploration of the human psyche at the same time, the film does a commendable job in bringing love to life in a overcast, rainy, and depressing Tokyo metropolis.

The USP of the film is the beautiful animation and the haunting soundtrack. When the clouds disperse and the sun shines through for the first time, it is truly a glorious sight.
