West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee trails by over 8000 votes

KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee of Trinamool Congress (TMC) is trailing by over 8000 votes in Nandigram constituency to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Adhikari has taken lead by more than 8,200 votes in initial trends.

A total of 17 rounds will be counted. The Purba Medinipur district, which is considered the Adhikari family's stronghold, includes the Nandigram assembly constituency.

Adhikari, a former TMC member, joined the BJP ahead of the Bengal elections challenging Banerjee's regime. Adhikari had stated that if he does not win the Nandigram seat by a margin of at least 50,000 votes, he will retire from politics.

Banerjee during her campaign had claimed that she was not finding difficulties in any part of Nandigram.

The Left-Congress alliance is ahead in just one seat in the state.

In the eight-phase West Bengal assembly elections held between March 27 and April 29, exit polls predict a close race between the incumbent Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and the BJP.
