NEW DELHI: Sunil Arora, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, today announced the dates of the Assembly elections in West Bengal, which will be held in 8 phases from March 27 onwards. The counting of votes after the West Bengal polls will take place on May 2.

 

The 8 phase polling in West Bengal will be held on March 27, April 1, April 6, April 10, April 17, April 22, April 26 and April 29, said Arora.

 

It is pertinent to mention here that last time, the West Bengal polls were held in 7 phases.

 

The legislative assembly of West Bengal comprises 294 Members of Legislative Assembly, which include 294 members directly elected from single-seat constituencies.

The election for  234 seats in Tamil Nadu will be held in a single phase on April 6. On the same day, the Union Territory of Puducherry, will also head to the polling booths.

 

Arora has also informed that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) shall come into force immediately after the announcement of the election dates.

 

Meanwhile, poll officials, who have been declared as 'frontline personnel', will be inoculated against the COVID-19 before the polling gets underway, stated Arora.

 

"First, our state level poll officials will be vaccinated and then those at ECI HQ in New Delhi. In ECI headquarters too vaccination will start with the juniormost staffers and top officials will be vaccinated last," he said.

 

It needs mention here that a total of 824 assembly constituencies shall be going for polls during these elections. 18.68 crore electors will cast vote at 2.7 lakh polling stations in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.
