Tura, September 24, 2019:

Setting a great example for posterity, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of West Garo Hills, Ram Singh, walks 10 km every week to buy organic vegetables from local growers.

Sometimes, the DC is accompanied by his wife and their infant son, who is tied to his mother's back in Meghalaya's Tura. The DC can often be seen making the long trek with a large bamboo-made basket on his back, meant to hold the fresh greens.

Sharing the Garo Hills story on social media, Robert G Lyngdoh, a resident of Meghalaya, wrote, "This is the new face of Indian Bureaucracy. I am inspired. I guess the new breed of bureaucrats are very adoptive and act more as influencers; especially when they are posted in remote areas."

The Meghalaya man, Lyngdoh, further urged the people to eat organic vegetables and refrain from using plastics.

At a time when the environment is suffering greatly due to callousness of humans and nature is withering around us, this act of the DC is bound to raise awareness about the need to adopt a 'clean and green' lifestyle.

It is to be mentioned here that lately the leaders of Meghalaya have adopted positive measures to inspire people. Banning Plastic in Iewduh, Fit Meghalaya and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma walking his way to work on Wednesdays are some of the positive steps that have emerged over the past few months.
