West Tripura DM relieved of post over viral video of him stopping a wedding midway

AGARTALA: The Tripura government today accepted West Tripura district magistrate (DM) Shailesh Kumar Yadav’s request to relieve him of office following an inquiry into the alleged misconduct by him during a wedding ceremony here on April 26.

On Sunday, Yadav wrote to the chief secretary of the state to relieve him of the charges as DM and collector of the district.

State law minister Ratan Lal Nath today said the government has accepted Yadav’s request and relieved him of the charges as DM and collector of the district.

The Tripura government has constituted a high level enquiry into allegations leveled against Yadav.

In a video that went viral on social media, Yadav is seen stopping a wedding ceremony on April 26, in Agartala, after 10 pm, when the night curfew commences in Agartala Municipal Council (AMC) area.

The DM is seen shoving the groom by the neck and arresting everyone present at the wedding, including the bride and the groom’s family.

Yadav is also seen slapping a priest and tearing up the written permission for the wedding he himself had signed.

The video created uproar in the social media and many called for immediate action against Yadav.

Celebrities like singer Sonu Nigam, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Chandigarh chapter and Tripura opposition leader Manik Sarkar sharply reacted to the incident.

On the other hand, several ruling BJP MLAs also wrote to the chief secretary of the state seeking the DM’s removal.
