GUWAHATI: Debabrata Saikia, the Assam MLA who was yesterday reinstated as the leader of the opposition in Assam, told Inside Northeast that he will throw his support behind any candidate who represents the core ideology of the party for the post of Assam's Chief Minister, including Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi.

"I will support any candidate who upholds the core ideology of the party. Nowadays, it is really difficult to find tall figures, so I will throw my support behind any candidate who is chosen. Our party is not for individuals, rather, our party depends on ideology. If Gaurav Gogoi is chosen by the party's high command, I will support him for the CM post. Likewise, I will also support Ripun, Bora, Pradyut Bordoloi, or whoever else is projected as the CM," Saikia told Inside Northeast over the phone.

Asked about the sealing of the alliance between the AJP and Raijar Dal earlier in the day, Saikia said that the regional parties should gauge their strength and mull joining the Congress and its allies if they hope to topple the saffron party from power.

"I believe that there should be a united fight against the BJP in the ensuing polls. There is still time for them to come to decision. There are so many to gauge their strength. Before polls, after polls, we will agree to anything on the basis of the possibility of defeating the BJP," he told Inside Northeast.

AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and party leader Jagadish Bhuyan met arrested Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Thursday and finalised the alliance.

“We said it before that AJP and Raijor Dal will jointly face the upcoming elections. After our meeting with Akhil Gogoi, we would like to tell the people of Assam that our alliance has been finalised. A formal announcement in this regard will be made soon,” Lurinjyoti told journalists.
