New Delhi, August 14, 2019:

Aero warrior Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who became the face of the Indo-Pak conflict in the wake of the Pulwama attacks, will be conferred with the 'Vir Chakra' on Independence Day

It is to be mentioned that Abhinandan Varthaman is a wing-commander in the Indian Air Force. In the 2019 India-Pakistan standoff, the 36-year-old was held captive for 60 hours in Pakistan after his aircraft was shot down in an aerial dogfight. However, he won the hearts of the nation by staying cool, calm, and collected during captivity.

Abinandan was later released by the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan as a "gesture of peace." He was released at the Attari-Wagah border on March 1, 2019.

The wing commander cleared all medical tests and is expected to resume his flying duties soon. Abhinandan Varthaman was taken off flying duties due to injuries sustained in Pakistan after ejecting from his MiG-21 Bison fighter jet during a fight with Pakistan on February 27, 2019.
