Nagerbera, May 14, 2019:

In a major embarrassment to the Health Department of the state, an injured woman was carried to hospital in a hand-pulled-cart in Rangeswari village of Nagarbera, Assam.

The woman had been struck by lightning during the heavy storm in Assam on Monday, but due to the lack of ambulance service in the village and poor road conditions, the locals had carried her to hospital in the hand-pulled-cart.

This is not the very first time that the people are carrying patients in a hand-pulled-cart or Bullock carts. Such incidents are becoming increasingly common in many parts of the state.

For instance, a pregnant woman, identified as Dipali Doley hailing from Jugibari village of Lakhimpur district was forced to travel hospital over 9 km on a hand-pulled-cart lying on a table due to dilapidated road condition.

Not only this, but there are also reports of women giving birth to babies on the road and unable to reach the hospital on time due to poor roads. For instance, a pregnant woman, being taken to a hospital, gave birth to a baby on a road in Margherita. Her journey to the hospital was delayed due to bad road condition.

At a time when the state health minister and the finance minister are establishing new hospitals and medical colleges as their election campaign agenda, stress must also be laid on developing the existing services in the State.
