Women can now appear for NDA exams: Supreme Court

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court today passed an interim decision allowing women to take the National Defense Academy admission exam (NDA).

Although the Centre said that women cannot claim a breach of any basic right for being refused entrance, because male cadets educated there have no automatic advantage in future career development possibilities over women whose sole route into the Army is through short service commission recruiting.

The outcome is based on the petitions' final determination.

In a writ suit filed by Kush Kalra seeking permission for women applicants to sit for the NDA exam, a division bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hrishikesh Roy passed the interim decision.

The petition claims that by denying qualified women applicants the chance to enter the National Defence Academy, the Indian constitution's articles 14, 15, 16, and 19 have been violated.

The Supreme Court, while passing the interim orders, slammed the Army for not allowing women to sit the NDA exam, calling the policy choice a "mindset issue" and gender discriminatory.

The NDA exam is scheduled for September 5.
