Guwahati, March 6, 2019:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s NPP Party has made a foray into Assam politics in a big way as the party inaugurated its office in Kahilipara and the Meghalaya CM also addressed a gathering ouside Dispur Press Club in the city. Sangma’s NPP party, despite being allied with the NDA Government, opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and threatened to walk out of the Alliance. But despite the BJP’s repeated assurances of implementing the Bill after assuming power once again, Sangma’s party is yet to leave the alliance. Thus, one of the most persistent questions during the NPP’s inauguration in Assam is its current relationship status with the BJP.

When asked about his alliance with the BJP despite opposing the BJP-introduced Citizenship (Amendement) Bill, he said: “Our stand has been made amply clear by our actions. When it comes to governance, we are working with the NDA. When it comes to development, we are working with other parties, but when it comes to issues and ideology, there is no issue of compromise on any one of them. For the sake of development, there is no question on compromising on our ideology”, he said.
