GUWAHATI: Bodo People's Front (BPF) MLA Durga Das Boro on Tuesday stressed that young athletes like Lovlina Borgohain should be kept in 'control' so that they do not get distracted.

Speaking during the 7th working day of the assembly, Bodo said "They are young and hence vulnerable to distractions. Such distractions impact their focus towards their goals".

He said that proper guidance was required for young athletes.

Citing the example of sprinter Hima Das, who couldn't qualify for Tokyo Olympics due to injury, the MLA stressed that Lovlina should not get distracted so that she could achieve more in the long run.

He further praised the boxer for reaching the heights of the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Assam assembly, Debabrat Saikia proposed the government to make her Assam's sports ambassador.

To cheer for the athlete, a bicycle rally will be held in Guwahati on Wednesday which will be flagged off by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Lovlina secured the spot for Summer Games by defeating Uzbekistan’s Maftunakhon Melieva 5-0 in the Asian Olympic qualifiers women’s welterweight (69 kg category) in the quarterfinals.

Beyond the ring, Lovlina also gave a tough fight to the deadly virus after she got infected by COVID-19. However she had to miss the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) sanctioned 52-day Europe tour for 16 elite Indian boxers due to her ailment.

She is the first woman boxer from the state to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Also she is the second boxer after Shiva Thapa to represent the country in boxing.
