Delhi: After 17 years, on Sunday, Delhi recoded a minimum temperature of 6.9 degrees Celsius according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

As per IMD data, Delhi recorded a temperature of 7.3 degrees Celsius on November 28, 2006 while the lowest dip in the temperature was recorded in 1938 which was 3.9 degrees Celsius.

Following this, IMD has stated that Delhi might face colder days in the coming days this year. This could be because of a Pacific Ocean weather phenomenon which is known as the La Nina. The La Nina leads to “cascading impact on global weather condition during winters.”

During the phenomenon, the temperatures drop below the normal levels in the central Pacific Ocean and this can trigger winds that can change or influence the weather in various other locations.

Delhi had earlier recorded a minimum temperature of 11.5 degrees Celsius in 2019 and a temberature of 10.5 degrees Celsius in 2018. While in 2017 the capital recorded 7.6 degrees Celsius as the lowest.

Along with the extreme weather condition, Delhi is also impacted by poor air quality.

Delhi recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 353, also in the very poor category. Though wind direction continues to be north-westerly, its speed improved marginally on Saturday which didn’t allow pollution levels to deteriorate to “severe” category.
