JORHAT: Sivasagar legislator Akhil Gogoi who has reached his home village in Nagaon to spend some precious time with his mother has urged to government to reduce the price of diesel to check the skyrocketing prices of commodities in the state.

Gogoi said that the rise of diesel prices in Assam could lead to an inflation of prices across the board.

"The rising prices of petrol and diesel is worrisome. Once the price of diesel rises, it causes rises in prices across the board due to a rise in fares of trucks and buses. This leads to rising of prices of other commodities. Therefore the government must prioritize the reduction of the price of fuel so as to keep prices reasonable," said Gogoi.

Even tiny tots accompanied their elders to meet the renowned activist who has become a household name across India for his role in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Yesterday, when Gogoi reached his native village in Jorhat, scores of villagers (most notably women), came out of their houses and gave him a hearty welcome.

Talking to media persons today, Gogoi revealed that he ate and slept with his mother but there was a bit of inconvenience due to a power outage.

Earlier today, the peasant rights' activist met the locals of his native village who showered him with immense love and warmth.

Gogoi, who has been in jail for the last 18 months, was allowed by a court to step out of the jail on parole to visit his mother and teenage son.

Gogoi’s lawyer Shantanu Borthakur asked for parole after his 14-year-old son contracted COVID-19 and his 84-year-old mother --who suffers from diabetes -- has not been keeping well at all.

The 45-year-old chief of the Raijor Dal, a political party that he founded while in custody, was arrested in December 2019 for his alleged role in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.

After getting parole, Gogoi was seen sharing warm moments with his wife and son at his Guwahati residence. The MLA was seen brimming with happiness as he shared a traditional Assamese meal with his family.

A police team has escorted Gogoi and will bring him back after the visit is over.
