ITANAGAR: Continuing its war against drugs, Itanagar Police has arrested seven persons, including an APP constable and a woman, on charges of drug trafficking.

The police also recovered 68.24 grams of suspected heroin from them.

Speaking to reporters at Naharlagun Police Station SP Jimmy Chiram informed that constable Chillong Techi, who is working in Itanagar Women’s Police Station, along with two others - Joram Agung and Dani Kamo - was arrested from Naharlagun area around 11.30 pm for their alleged involvement in peddling of heroin in Itanagar Capital Region.

“Upon sustained interrogation, it was revealed that constable Chillong Techi obtains drugs from Banderdewa bypassing the nakas wearing his uniform and sells it to various people in ICR and uses the profit made to sustain his drug habit,” the SP said.

It was also revealed that he purchased the heroin from one Diggu Bhai of Banderdewa. Accordingly, a police team from Naharlagun PS led by SDPO Dekio Gumja, OC K Yangfo, SI S S Jha with the help of Banderdewa Police team arrested four more persons from Banderdewa on Monday - Monika Chetry, Taksingh Chetry alias Sanu Chetry, Putukan Hazarika alias Kunu Hazarika and Diganto Gogoi alias Diggu Bhai - all residents of Banderdewa.

Subsequently, a case has been registered at the Naharlagun PS under sections 21(b) and 27(a) of NDPS Act and further investigation is in progress, the SP said.

The Capital Police chief, meanwhile, said that his team has intensified its action against drug related cases. “This is clearly seen from the amount of cases registered. In 2019, eight cases were registered and 15 accused arrested. In 2020, 13 cases were registered with 21 people arrested, whereas in 2021 we have registered 18 cases so far and already surpassed the number of previous year’s cases and arrested a total of 37 people,” he said.

The SP also informed that 17.7 kg ganja, 508.86 gram brown sugar and 1058.75 gram heroin worth over Rs 23 lakh have been seized this year. He appealed to the denizens of ICR to cooperate in the fight against illegal drugs.
