GUWAHATI: Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that he believes that the government will be able to show a favourable outcome by June 7 in regards to its fight against the novel coronavirus.

"We are now witnessing that the positivity rate has dipped below five per cent. I believe that we will be able to give a favourable outcome to the people by June 7."

Sarma also says he believes that the number of deaths will also begin to decline in the times to come.

"The people who are dying now are the ones who had contracted the disease earlier. We think the number of deaths, as well as the number of patients, will begin to decline," he added.

Sarma also prophesied that the number of COVID-19 patients will decrease in the economic hub of Kamrup (Metro) as 5 out of the total 12 lakh population has already been inoculated.

About 1,500 cases on an average were being detected in and around the capital city a couple of weeks ago. That number, however, has now fallen to 569.

A declining trend has been witnessed in the major hotspots spread over Guwahati, Cachar, Nagaon, and Dibrugarh which has prompted experts to suggest that the second wave of the pandemic has already peaked in the state.

Somewhat worryingly, however, the number of daily Covid deaths is not showing a drastic fall and continues to be in the 80-90 range.

Assam reported 5,704 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday, informed the state government. With this, the cumulative case count in the state has reached 3,92,574. The northeastern state also saw 4,784 recoveries and 83 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tallies to 3,34,418 and 3,088 respectively.
