Assam closes all national parks, wildlife sanctuaries in the state for visitors

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has ordered closure of all national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the state, in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The state forest department, through an order, said that due to the possibilities of transmission of the virus from human to animal, all the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the state have been closed to visitors with immediate effect, until further order.

Earlier, the Assam forest department had closed down elephant safari for visitors in Kaziranga National Park from April 30.

On April 17, the Kaziranga park authorities had directed all incoming tourists from other states, to mandatorily undergo Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) for COVID-19 or produce COVID-19 negative report, tested 72 hours prior to their arrival.

Assam recorded the highest single-day spike of 4,489 fresh cases of Covid-19 and 29 more fatalities due to the infection over the past 24 hours.

With the new cases recorded during the period, the COVID-19 tally in the state mounted to 2,63,450.
