GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has dedicated 80 ICU beds including 40 for pediatric patients, during his two-day visit to the Barak valley, and also has taken stock of the progress of the construction work of the 500-bedded hospital at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) premises.

Taking to Twitter CM Sarma wrote,“Inspected construction of a 500-bed hospital at SMCH & inaugurated 80 ICU beds (including 40 for pediatric), taking total ICU beds to 180. A cancer hospital and a regional forensic lab also in the pipeline. All this will bolster healthcare infrastructure for people in Barak Valley.

Sarma said that the state government, as per its commitment to making health care services more advanced, accessible and accountable, brought about “massive infrastructural development of the health facilities."

He further added “ The government has taken several steps for creating infrastructure in SMCH along with other medical colleges and hospitals. Prior to the COVID pandemic, SMCH had only 14 ICU beds. Now the number has gone up to 180 beds including 80 ICU beds inaugurated today. As a part of understanding with Coal India Limited, another 40 ICU beds will be added to SMCH. Along with the 500 bedded hospital, the Cancer Hospital of Silchar will start functioning soon,”

The Assam Chief Minister also said that approval has already been granted for setting up a Regional Forensic Laboratory at Silchar.
