GUWAHATI: In a bid to spread awareness on climate change, the PAN KV Maligaon Alumni Association (PAN-KVMAA) initiated Plantation Drive Activity under the title “Seeds of Future – Plant a tree, get oxygen free” on Friday.

The plantation drive, that took place at the premises of Kendriya Vidyalaya, NFR Maligaon, is also aimed at finding ways to combat the grave issue of climate change.

The association has planned to take this activity forward with regular such plantation activities round the year within city of Guwahati.

Varun Mitra, Deputy Commissioner, KVS-RO, Guwahati, graced the occasion with his presence alongside Garima Sodhi, Deputy Chief Personnel Officer, N.F. Railway, Maligaon; and encouraged the activity by planting saplings in the school.

Talking on the occasion, Mitra said, “It is a great experience to visit Kendriya Vidyalaya, Maligaon and to witness how the Alumni Association is active to bring in positive changes in the society as well as in the school. The current Covid situation has taught us the significance of nature. It is our moral obligation to preserve nature for the future generation. Plantation is the most important activity in nature prevention. Human beings should realize that trees can survive without them but they cannot survive without trees”.

Taking the thought forward, Angshuman Dey, President, PAN-KVMAA emphasized the need to be more environment friendly.

“Cutting of trees on pretext of road construction and other infrastructure development is the root cause of global warming resulting in climate change and that is why we are facing such extreme climate changes. It is time that we think and act towards fundamental transformation in all aspects of society; starting with plantation of trees that maintain the Earth’s ecosystem and generates oxygen that is vital for life sustenance on this planet”, he said.

Emphasizing the importance of sustainable living, Ruma Chakraborty, Secretary, PAN-KVMAA said, “Having a sustainable lifestyle can offset climate change and reduce environmental damage. We should stop usage of plastic, protect wildlife, use water wisely, support local produce and have organic food, reuse and recycle and grow our own plants and vegetables”.

Adding to these thoughts, Sumita Chanda, Treasurer, PAN-KVMAA commented, “We have already seen the wrath of Covid and the importance of Oxygen in our lives. So, if we want to live on this planet, we need to grow more and more trees and adopt a sustainable lifestyle”.

Kendriya Vidyalaya, Maligaon is a prestigious school under Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India and is presently headed by R K Das, Principal.

PAN-KVMAA is a non-profit society, registered on 1 June 2018 under the Societies Registration Act of India, and aims in bringing positive change towards the School, support its past alumni and contribute towards the society at large.
