Assam police raid 'child marriage' venue; groom arrested

BARPETA: A case of child marriage has been registered at Kalgachia police station in Barpeta, Assam. three persons, including the bridegroom and the mother of the bride, have been arrested by the police.

The incident reportedly took place at Dabandia village under Kalgachia police station in Barpeta on May 21.

Talking to InsideNE, a police official said, "Based on specific information, a team from the Barvitha outpost (OP) intercepted a child marriage venue and apprehended the bridegroom and mother of the bride under sections 9,10 and 11 of the Child Marriage Act 2006."

The accused groom has been identified as Noor Muhammad (25) a resident of Bonghughi village under Kalgachia police station.

Noor Muhammad was all set to marry a 17-year-old underage girl.

Moreover, an investigation on the matter is underway.

Child marriage has always been a problem in India, with social systems that still encourage the marriage of underage girls and boys.
