Assam police seizes 8 cattle being smuggled to Bangladesh

DHUBRI: Amid the ongoing row over the Cattle Protection Bill of the Assam government, the smuggling of cattle remains rampant along Assam's 263-km long border with Bangladesh.

In a latest raid, police rescued as many as 8 cattle that were being smuggled across the border.

Police rescued the cattle heads from Shahebganj under Gauripur police station in Dhubri.

The recovered cattle were being prepared for shipment to Bangladesh through a distant settlement of Dhubri, where they were transported from Haryana via West Bengal by raft through the Gangadhar river.

Dhubri police have stepped forward to tackle the threat of cattle heads being smuggled across the border.

Smugglers, on the other hand, are taking advantage of the darkness at night to supply cattle head illegally crossing the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Based on a tip-off, Manoj Neor, IC, Balajan, Dhubri, carried out a special operation in the early hours of Saturday in Shahebganj area, Balajan, and was able to seize eight cattle heads.

Due to a lack of lighting, the smugglers were able to take advantage of darkness and escaped, leaving the cattle behind.

The cattle are suspected to have been brought from other states of India.

According to sources, the rescues cattles are being kept in a government pound.

"It is to be noted  that the Bakri Eid season is aapproaching, and demand is considerable," said Manoj Neor.

The organisers have told the police that the Dhubri cattle market, which is held before the Bakri Eid celebration, will be suspended this year in view of the state government's ongoing crackdown.
