GUWAHATI: As the state of Assam is going towards by-election, the suspension over ticker sharing is reaching new heights not only among the public but political leaders as well, so does calculation for the same.

Rumour was doing the surface that former two time Congress MLA from Jorhat Rana Goswami will be the Congress faces in Mariani to field against former four-time Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who had resigned from the party to join Bharatiya Janata Party, in the by-election.

On asked by InsideNE, Rana Goswami said, "Not have I mentioned once that I want to contest from Mariani. It was the party workers who have suggested my name."

Goswami, who is the Working President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee as well, added further,"We already have more than one eligible candidate in Mariani. I definitely am not thinking of contesting from there until unless the party says so."

Mariani, from where Rupjyoti Kurmi was elected consecutive four times, on asked whether his change of allegiance to BJP will harm Congress or not, Goswami expressed, "Not at all. He betrayed the people of Mariani by quitting his post within one and a half month. People are furious against him. Also, from whatever we have heard people are not very happy with BJP after Alok Ghosh's death as well. BJP has been betraying him for quite a while now and he ultimately died without getting any proper recognition from the party."

"Mariani has always been with Congress and people have been voting and electing candidates on the symbol of the hand. We believe the same will repeat this time as well," Goswami added.

At least six constituencies of Assam to go by-election following death and resignation of MLAs. Where Congress is in a fight to regain its two fortresses Thowra, Mariani and whatever else comes into their hand whereas the BJP is keen on crossing the magic number of 64 in the Assam Legislative Assembly with a house strength of 126 seats.
