Assam students approach SC seeking cancellation of 10,12 board exams

A group of students from Assam filed a fresh plea in the supreme court on Monday seeking cancellation of state board exams of class 10 and 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

GUWAHATI: A group of students from Assam filed a fresh plea in the supreme court on Monday seeking cancellation of state board exams of class 10 and 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Reportedly, four Assam-based students moved the intervention plea in the court stating that the state government is still in doubts regarding conducting examinations even though it had earlier postponed the examination.

“Classification sought to be made in present case between CBSE (Central Board Of Secondary Education), CISE (Council for Indian School Certificate Examination) and other state board students on one hand and the students of Assam SEBA (Secondary Education Board of Assam) and AHSEC (Assam Higher Secondary Education Council) on the other hand are prima facie irrational, unreasonable and is bad in law on the ground of violation of the basic feature of our Constitution, namely the principles of equality enshrined under Article 14,” the application said.

They are referring to a statement of ministers and the Chief Minister where it was implied that the board exams might be conducted between July 15 and July 20 for few paper in the the positivity rate of COV ID cases drops down to below 2 per cent.

“It is humbly submitted that the …statements made by the Chief Minister of Assam has created a situation of havoc and panic among the students and therefore, almost all the students, their parents and family members have been pushed into a state of dilemma and their mental condition has been devastated. Thus, the present applicant is before this Court seeking immediate intervention in the matter in the interest of safety, health (both physical and mental) and well being of all the students, their parents and family members,” the plea said.

The state board had earlier postponed the examinations owing to the COVID situation in the state. The students have made the referring to the decisions of various state boards and even the central borads to cancel examinations seeking similar relaxations.
