Benedic Marak wins CEM position in Meghalaya's Garo Council

SHILLONG: National People's Party (NPP) candidate Benedic Marak has been elected as the new chief executive member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

The NPP's candidate Sangma won the CEM position in GHADC with 16 votes against 12 votes secured by the rival Congress.

Congratulating Marak, chief minister Conrad Sangma wrote, "Benedic R. Marak has been elected as the CEM of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). My best wishes to him as he take on the task for the people of Garo Hills region and furthers NPP's mission to safeguard the rights of its people."

Yesterday, Rakesh Sangma was elected as the  Chairman of the newly-elected Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) today.

Rakesh Sangma of NPP bagged 16 votes against 12 votes polled by his opponent from Congress to win the election.

It needs mention here that the NPP has staked claim for power in a tribal council in Meghalaya without ally BJP as a partner.

The Congress emerged as the single-largest party with victory in 12 out of 29 seats.

The NPP closely followed the Congress as it grabbed 11 seats.

While the BJP has won 2 seats, Garo National Council has managed to grab just one seat. Three remaining seats were secured by independent candidates.

The GHADC election was held on April 12.
