GUWAHATI: Ahead of the ensuing Assembly elections in Assam, the state unit of the Indian National Congress (INC) today officially launched its 'Axom Basaon Ahok' to counter the rival BJP's 100+' campaign that has already picked up steam.

Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi, who is also the Chairman of the manifesto committee which is inviting opinions from all citizens, said, "We have to save Assam from ego, we have to save BJP from torture, we have to save Assam from conflict. The BJP party has relentlessly tortured the poor. While filling the pockets of the rich, they have hurt the interests of the poor."

Terming the campaign as an "andolan", the MP further said that already people are beginning to send in videos to the campaign website expressing their woes. "We have taken each video seriously; the more serious issues will be included in the manifesto, which will be for the people."

Pradyut Borodoloi, Nagaon MP and former Minister in the Tarun Gogoi Cabinet, said that the Grand Old Party will undertake journeys to each and every corner of the state in its bid to reach voters. "The first such journey shall be undertaken on the 12th from the native village of Srimanta Sankardeva. The journey will be in 4 phases and we hope to reach each class of citizen."

Exuding hope that the Congress stitched Grand Alliance will form the government at Dispur, Gogoi added that a change in government is the "need of the hour."

"We are confident that the parties will eventually form the government as it is necessary for the interests of Assam," he said.

Sushmita Dev, senior Congress leader, said that the Congress' proposed yatra will take it to every nook and cranny of the state. "Today, Assam is under attack. The BJP's politics of polarization seeks to tear the very fabric of the state apart. We have to bring back secular culture to the state. We assure you and we promise you that we will save Assam from a government that is anti-people, anti-tea tribe, anti-development, as well as anti-woman."
