GUWAHATI: Loksabha MP Gaurav Gogoi from Assam on Friday has indicated that the party is going to pull out of the Grand Alliance that it formed against Bharatiya Janata Party before the Assam Assembly Poll held in March. The Grand alliance is consist of several parties including Hagrama Mohilary led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Badruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the left.

A day before, Congress President Bhupen Borah also indicated that the BPF was coming out of the alliance. He has also claimed that several leaders from the All India United Democratic Front has been supporting the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party which is against the ethics of the Grand Alliance.

Gogoi said, “Though there are many candidates that grand alliance had put up in the Assembly Polls, but because they were not from the Congress party, the supporters and the grass-root workers of Congress did not like it. So it’s’ time to free Congress from the Mahajot.”

Gogoi’s statement came at a time when the state was eyeing at a by-election soon in five constituencies. Though in last assembly elections, Congress had led the grand alliance, Gogoi believed that it’s time that the party must concentrate on making itself stronger than before.

The Congress leader did not comment on the possibility of fighting the by-polls alone.

“The grand alliance (Mahajot) was formed some three months before the last state polls to uproot the BJP regime. BJP has won the polls for the second time and Congress has been playing its role as a vocal Opposition in the assembly house. But now situation is different and it’s time that Congress must free itself from the Mahajot and strengthen its own grip across all the constituencies,” said Gogoi.
