Delhi allows home delivery of liquor amid pandemic

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Tuesday permitted the home delivery of both Indian and foreign liquor through a mobile app or online web portal amid the 'unlocking' process in the national capital.

Liquor manufacturers had earlier asked the Aam Aadmi Party-led government to allow home delivery of alcoholic beverages.

Delhites were seen queuing in front of liqour shops ahead of the lockdown to stock up.

"The licensee shall make delivery of liquor at the residences only if order is received through mobile app or online web portal and no delivery shall be made to any hostel, office and institution," read the government notification.

Only holders of L-13 licence will be allowed to carry out home deliveries, and not every liquor outlet in the city.

Maharashtra, another state hit hard by the pandemic, has also allowed the home delivery of liquor.

The government allowed home delivery after a severe COVID-19 wave this year. Shops were asked to remain shut in major cities like Mumbai, as cases of coronavirus increased rapidly.

In Delhi, the COVID-19 positivity rate dipped below 1 per cent for the first time since March 19. The daily positivity rate is at 0.99 per cent. The national capital saw 648 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.

Delhi has so far reported 14,26,240 COVID-19 cases of the virus.
