NEW DELHI: To combat the increase in COVID-19 cases in the state, the Delhi government has imposed a curfew with effect from today until Monday morning.

The announcement was made after chief minister Kejriwal had a meeting with senior government officers and lieutenant governor Anil Baijal about the Covid-19 situation in the national capital.

Delhi, one of the worst-affected cities in India, has already implemented weekend curfews as well as night curfews from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. until April 30.

On Sunday, the state saw the highest increase in its daily COVID tally, with 25,462 new cases recorded, and with a positivity rate of nearly 30%, nearly every third sample checked in the city is positive.

In the midst of the growing number of cases, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday stated that the city is experiencing a severe shortage of oxygen and beds for Covid-19 patients, alleging that the city's quota has been diverted to other states.

The chief minister's remarks came just hours after he wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting help with hospital beds and emergency oxygen supplies.

"Del facing acute shortage of oxygen. In view of sharply increasing cases, Del needs much more than normal supply. Rather than increasing supply, our normal supply has been sharply reduced and Delhi's quota has been diverted to other states. OXYGEN HAS BECOME AN EMERGENCY IN DEL," he tweeted.
