TAMULPUR: Tamulpur MLA Leho Ram Boro's passing away after a brief battle with the COVID-19 disease earlier today has cast a pall of gloom in Baksa district's Tamulpur town, where the local residents remember him with absolute reverence.
Boro was a socio-economic-cultural activist and well as an educationist who was quite popular in Baksa district for his association with various social welfare groups and relentless efforts to improve his own town.
Boro was born to a very poor family in the Deochunga village of Bholajhar in the undivided Kamrup district on January 1 of 1958. During his childhood, he established himself as a precocious student.
He fished in the river and sold the fish in Bholajhar and Atarikhat markets to pay school fees while he was in school.
He passed the High School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSLC) from Naokata High School and graduated from Cotton College following which he was appointed assistant teacher at Tamulpur Higher Secondary School in 1978.
He later acquired a master's degree in English and joined Tamulpur Higher Secondary School as a subject teacher in English.
After teaching for a few years, he was appointed as Block Development Officer (BDO) after passing the Assam Public Service Commission.
He voluntarily retired in 2016 after acting as a skilled administrative officer in various Block offices in Assam.
After his retirement, he got involved in social welfare activities in Tamulpur. Leho Ram Boro took a vital role in remodeling Tamulpur town.
Leho Ram Boro played a special role in celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Tamulpur Higher Secondary School, Silver Jubilee of Pashim Tamulpur High School, Silver Jubilee of Barkhopa High School, Silver Jubilee of Majdia High School.

He was also associated with many institutions including Tamulpur Sakha Sahitya Sabha, Tamulpur College, Tamulpur Bishnujyoti Jatiyo Bidyaloya, and Tamulpur Sankardev Vidya Niketon.
He also used to teach English to students in a number of leading academic institutions including Tamulpur Bishnujyoti Jatiyo Bidyaloya, Tamulpur Shankardev Vidya Niketon, Pashim Tamulpur High School, Tamulpur College, etc.
The Akashi Book Fair has been held in Tamulpur for the past twelve years with the special efforts of Leho Ram Boro and the initiative of Akashi Literary Society.
The multi-faceted Boro was able to make his identity as an accomplished quiz master in Assam.
Leho Ram Boro has spent years as music advisor to Bardaishila Theatre, the leading mobile theatre group in Assam.
It also served as an advisor to the popular monthly Assamese magazine Barta Pakhili in Assam till the moment of his death.
He was associated with the sports world and decorated the post of president of Tamulpur District Sports Club from 2009 to 2013.
The newly-elected MLA who was suffering from hypertension and diabetes fell ill in the morning on May 27.
He immediately reached the Tamulpur primary health centre where he was tested Covid-19 positive. He was immediately shifted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he suffered a stroke. He was then shifted to the Intensive Care Unit where he breathed his last.
His body was brought back to Tamulpur this afternoon and the last rites were performed on the banks of Kala river in Kumarikata in the presence of political leaders and admirers under the supervision of district administration following full covid protocol.
Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, BTC Chief Pramod Boro, Minister Urkhao Gaura Brahma, MLA Ashok Singhal, and BTC Executive Member Ranendra Narzary paid their last respects to the noted figure at Tamulpur.
He leaves behind two sons, brothers and sisters, relatives, and numerous admirers.
