Hagrama Mohilary & BPF are under a lot of “pressure”, claims Assam Congress chief

GUWAHATI: Amid reports that Hagrama Mohilary-led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will soon depart the Congress-led Grand Alliance, Congress president Ripun Bora has said that the BPF chief is “under compulsion.”

Bora said that Hagrama might be under a bit of pressure as he is reportedly being hounded by Central agencies investigating his alleged link to anti-social elements.

Asked about the media about this brewing issue earlier today, Bora said: “I am not in touch with Hagrama as he is fleeing due to threats from the NIA & CBI. They (BPF) have said that they have a compulsion. We are being blackmailed and threatened, they said.”

When InsideNE reached out to Bora, he said that although the Congress party leaders have not been in touch with Hagrama, they have spoken to some of the other senior leaders of the regional party.

“Some of them have said that they are under pressure. That seems to be the prevailing sentiment. However, it would be unwise to comment further on this issue before any further developments.”

Rumours started circulating after BPF leaders decided to ‘skip’ a joint press conference called by the parties here on Saturday.

The allies tried to downplay the issue, claiming that the BPF leaders were absent due to “some difficulty perhaps”

However, an official declaration in this regard is yet to be made.

The BPF had joined hands with the grand alliance ahead of the Assam assembly elections. The Congress in Assam had formed a grand alliance with link-minded parties including the AIUDF to take on the BJP-led NDA during the assembly polls in Assam.

It is being reported that discontentment brews within the BPF after its loss of face in the recently held elections that saw its primary rival United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) have the last laugh.
