Manipur seeks Rs 100 crore assistance from Centre to fight COVID-19

Manipur has sought financial assistance of Rs 100 crore from the Central government for combating the spread of the lethal coronavirus which has infected a total of 25 in the state.

Emphasizing on the need to improve the health infrastructure to contain the spread of the virus, L Jayantakumar Singh, the Health and Family Welfare minister, Manipur, wrote to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan seeking the financial assistance.

It is pertinent to be mention that after the first two cases tested negative for the COVID-19, Manipur was gained corona-free status. “However, the situation has changed with detection of 23 confirmed COVID-19 cases within 72 hours in the state,” the minister said.

He further informed that a total of 11,844 people of the state stranded I different parts of the country have returned so far. “Around 40,000 people of the state are stranded in different parts of the country. Of which, 11,844 have returned to the state by bus and train,” the minister said.

Saying that the state has faced severe financial crisis, the minister said, “The state has no sufficient testing capacity. There is also shortage of PPEs in the state.”

Northeast

In Northeast India, Assam has registered maximum number of positive COVID-19 cases followed by Tripura. The virus has infected a total of 214 people and claimed four lives in Assam so far a while it has infected a total of 173 in Tripura. Assam saw a massive spike since May 17. Over 100 cases reported in just four days in the state making the situation grim. However, most of the cases have a travel history.

In India

The novel coronavirus has infected a total of 1,18,447 people and claimed 3,583 lives as on May 22, 2020, morning, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Among the states, Maharashtra is the first state to cross a thousand deaths. It has recorded 41,642 corona cases with 11,726 cured and 1454 deaths. The western state is followed by Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Gujarat has corona 12,905 cases with 5488 cured and 773 deaths. Tamil Nadu has crossed 13,967 cases with 6282 cured and 94 deaths. The National Capital with 11,659  COVID-19 cases has crossed the 10 thousand mark on May 18th, 2020. So far, 5567 have been cured in Delhi with 194 deaths.

India has surpassed the China’s official figure of 82,933 confirmed coronavirus cases. India is the 11th most cases in the world. So far, the USA has the highest number of covid19 cases at 1,592,723.
