Mizoram extends lockdown-like COVID restrictions for another week

AIZAWL: The Mizoram government has announced an extension to their lockdown-like restrictions in the state till May 3 in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases.

As the guidelines stated, public places such as parks, picnic spots, movie theatres, gyms, community halls, restaurants, shopping complexes and places of worship will remain closed throughout the period.

Though weddings and funerals are allowed but the number of attendees must not exceed 30. Other social events such as birthday parties, anniversaries celebration and sporting events are strictly prohibited throughout the period.

The restrictions for the residents from stepping out of their homes and also educational institutions will remain closed.

Shops selling essential commodities, eateries, vegetables, flowers, meat, construction materials and spare parts in the state capital and district headquarters have been allowed to open based on the arrangement made by local authorities, the order said.

Besides, fuel stations, motor workshops, cold storage and warehouses, data and call centres, carpentry workshop, steel fabrication workshop, bakery, tailoring shop, weaving shops and related shops are also allowed to operate with arrangement made by local authorities.

Further, those arriving in the state will have to undergo seven-day mandatory home isolation. Passengers from abroad, however, will have to undergo institutional quarantine.

Previously the government had enforced seven-day restrictions in Aizawl and 10 other district headquarters from April 20 to April 26.

Aizawl had registered as many as 105 new COVID cases detected in the past 24 hours which mounted the state tally to 5388.

Out of the total 712 active cases in Mizoram, Aizawl alone has 556 active cases.

On April 20, a 41-year-old man, who had been administered two doses of Covishield vaccine, has tested COVID-19 positive among the 91 other patients, after which the lockdown-like restrictions came into force in the state of Mizoram.
